The Ankh was, for the ancient Egyptians,
the symbol (the actual Hieroglyphic sign) of life but it is an enduring
icon that remains with us even today as a Christian cross. The Ankh is
possibly one of the most widely recognized symbols other than the cross,
sacred to the ancient Egyptians, and often used as an amulet, this
symbol is basically the T or Tau cross supporting a circular shape.
Giving the appearance of the shape of a key, in Egyptian hieroglyphics
this symbol stands for life or living, and forms part of the Egyptian
words such as 'health' and 'happiness'. Linked with Egyptian gods and
goddesses, such as Isis (eternal mother and High Priestess) and Osiris,
most gods would appear to have possessed the ankh, to symbolize life,
sexual union, and immortality. It is thus often referred to as the Key
of Life, or even the cross of life, because of its creative power. The
loop of the ankh is considered to be the feminine, whilst the T shape is
considered to be the masculine staff. Together, these symbols reflect a
continued existence.
Did You Know? -- The famous burial mask of
King Tut was inlaid with Turquoise, Carnelian and Lapis Lazuli.... You
can Choose from them!
TURQUOISE - Turquoise is one of the oldest
gemstones known to man. It was a very popular gemstone in Ancient Egypt.
The Egyptians used the stone for its protective qualities and believed
it would protect one from doom and an untimely death. Turquoise was
associated with the sky, and bringing sky energy to earth. The Goddess
Hathor (Goddess of love, joy and fertility) was dubbed “The Mistress of
Turquoise.”
CARNELIAN - To the Ancient Egyptians, Carnelian was
symbolic of the blood of life and was thought to purify the blood of the
wearer, and to help relieve pain. Carnelian was one of the oldest
gemstones mined in ancient Egypt and the stone was used to make the Djed
pillar amulet -- which was symbolic of the tree trunk in which the body
of the god Osiris was assembled. Carnelian was also represented
immortality and eternal life.
LAPIS LAZULI - Lapis Lazuli was a
particularly popular gemstone, as the Egyptians believed that its deep
blue color offset with glimmering pyrite was reminiscent of the heavens
and symbolized creation and rebirth. As the stone of heaven, it is only
natural that the Ancient Egyptians would use Lapis to honor the Egyptian
Sky Goddess Isis, who is considered to be omniscient, all-knowing, and
all-seeing. The conviction that Lapis Lazuli holds Her soul is thought
to give the possessor of this gemstone a connection with her knowledge,
insight, and magickal powers
