Sekhmet Symbolism / Sekhmet FolkLore - Sekhmet was the lioness-headed goddess of the sun, war, destruction and healing. She is one of the oldest deities and one of the most powerful. Her name may also be spelled as Sakhet, Sekmet, Sachmet, Sakhmet, Sekhet or Sacmis in Greek that translates to 'the Powerful One'. She was the sister and wife of Ptah. She was created by the fire of Ra's eye. Ra created her as a weapon of vengeance to destroy men for their wicked ways and disobedience to him. While she may bring about disease and plague to those who have wronged Her, she is also a master of the art of Medicine as she provides the cure to various ailments she may have brought to man. She was the Patron Goddess of all Healers and Physicians. She is also referred to as The Mighty One of Enchantments, The Mistress and Lady of the Tomb, The Gracious One, and The Destroyer of Rebellion. Sekhmet has a twin sister name Bast | Bastet. Together the twin sisters formed the 'Yin-Yang' of Egyptian religion. Bastet being the creative force and Sekhmet being the destructive force. Sekhmet is the Goddess of the West and Her sacred color is red.
