Peace Symbol Charm
Peace Sign Symbolism / Peace Symbol Folklore
The peace sign was designed in 1958 by Gerald Holtom, in England, for the Direct Action Committee against Nuclear War. It was derived from the semaphore "wig - wag" flag symbols (used by Navy and boy scouts) for "N" and "D" standing for Nuclear Disarmament. More radical anti-war activists turned it upside down to mean Unilateral Disarmament. In the 1960's, it became a generic anti-war symbol. Some of the religious right claimed the peace sign was an anti-religious broken cross, and the John Birch Society ridiculed it as "the footprint of the American chicken."
It continues to be worn as an anti-establishment, pro-humanity and pro-peace symbol.
