The Lovers in Tarot Symbolism
The card that the general public would be most likely to associate with weddings would be Card 6 in Tarot, The Lovers. The name The Lovers is somewhat misleading for The Lovers has many meanings, and the usual or most common meaning is not a love affair, as many people would think. The Lovers certainly can and sometimes does mean love and romance, but it more often means choice, decisions, and a balance of male and female energies.

The Elemental of Air rules The Lovers. This is the card of intellect, communication, and interrelationships.

The planet Mercury rules The Lovers, and Gemini is its Astrological correspondent. This emphasizes both the communicative aspect of the card, as well as its duality. The entire card is composed of opposites, with various polarities represented. Things are together, and yet not together.

The Hebrew Letter which represents The Lovers is Zain, the Sword. The dualities involved with Card 6 are shown again. In the intellectual sense, the sword is the instrument of analysis, cutting through the confusion to the essentials. This is the lesson of this card; to look at things through their opposites, and in so doing, to intrinsically know them.

The Numerological Correspondent is the number 6. This is the number of synthesis, integration, and balance.
