Roses - Rose Folklore / Rose Symbolism - Rosebuds
Roses, one of the earliest flowers known to man, symbolize love, magic, hope, and passion. Fossil evidence shows that roses have existed since prehistoric times. The first cultivated roses appeared in Asian gardens more than 5,000 years ago. The rose represents ultimate beauty and perfection. The name "rose" comes from the Latin word rosa, which means "red," but roses come in many different colors. The Greeks associated roses with the blood of Aphrodite's beloved Adonis.The Romans believed white roses grew where the tears of Venus fell, as she mourned the loss of her beloved Adonis. Her son Cupid, while being stung by a bee, shot arrows in the rose garden. The sting of the arrows became thorns. Venus pricked her foot on a thorn, and the droplets of blood dyed the roses red. Romans used so many roses in feasts and parties that there is at least one case of guests being suffocated by rose petals falling from the ceiling. The yellow rose meant infidelity and jealousy in Roman times, but today often means friendship.
