White Mother-of-Pearl (MOP) Beads
Sea shells were once used as money in many parts of the
world, including Polynesia. Because of this, Mother-of-Pearl is often
associated with money and riches and talismans to bring wealth are
sometimes made with this gemstone. Legend says placing Mother-of-Pearl
on a new infant will protect them from the perils of new life. Because
Mother-of-Pearl is an organic gemstone, caution should be used when
cleaning this gem. Bleached Mother-of-Pearl is a snowy, shimmery white,
though some Mother-of-Pearl is black. May be referred to as "Oyster
Shell". In its natural state, Mother-of-Pearl is a shimmery tan
and called "Caramel Mother-of-Pearl". Mother-of-pearl epitomizes
feminine loveliness. These iridescent white beads come from the hard
internal layer of the sea mollusk that produces pearls. These MOP
beads stand out when used as spacers and make soft additions to darker-colored
strands. A Grade.
